Caring and Commitment in Action

A Message from the President

Kathy Hurwitz

Welcome to Assistance League of Austin where we put caring and commitment into action. Our chapter is one of 120 chapters operating under the banner of the National Assistance League. While we are part of a national organization, our chapter serves our own community by responding to local needs. Our earned and contributed monies are all spent here in Austin, and our nine programs address challenges that Austin’s citizens-in-need face each day.

We are best known for our flagship program, Operation School Bell®.  This program provides wardrobes of school-appropriate clothes for more than 5,000 in-need school children from the Greater Austin area in the effort to improve their educational opportunities. Our second largest program, Toy Cart at Dell Children’s Medical Center of Central Texas, offers a bright spot in the day through toys and games that help young patients’ hospital stays and experiences feel more “child-friendly”. Our seven other programs address a wide array of challenges to the well-being of the most fragile populations, from the youngest to the most senior citizens in Austin – challenges relative to education, health, and the basic needs. Read more about all the programs under the tab identified as “Programs”.

Every year Assistance League volunteers donate thousands of hours on philanthropic programs, fundraising and administrative services. For the Fiscal Year ending May 31, 2016, the value of a volunteer hour was $23.41. That means that the nearly 69,000 hours reported for the 2015-16 year had a dollar value of more than $1,610,000.

We thank all in the community who donate and shop in our THRIFT HOUSE, who contribute to our Clothes for Kids fundraiser, who tell others about our work, and in other ways provide funding sources that both support and expand our programs. You’re invited to join us and help us continue to put caring and commitment in action.
